CARLOS GOTLIEB
At the start of the 21st century, the French government launched a new urban planning agenda to engage in the process of converting the larger French agglomerations into sustainable cities. Since then, the major French cities have been creatively implementing their specific development instruments for managing change and adapting large territories, resulting in a series of emblematic urban transformation projects. The projects tackle issues of mobility, density, and integration of nature, translating these questions into innovative spatial models. The experimentation relies on decades of reflection concerning territoriality and the making of metropolises, driven by French urban theoreticians. This lecture presents the primary concepts of the emerging French approach; it briefly sketches out development in the French capital region around Paris before diving into strategies and projects of the expanding city of Bordeaux.

Carlos Gotlieb studied architecture at the University of Buenos Aires before studying urbanism at the French Urbanism Institute of Paris 8 University, the Architecture School of Paris-Belleville, and the Polytechnic University of Madrid, resulting in his PhD in Architecture. He has practiced architecture and urbanism in Paris since 1987, driving projects such as the conversion of Paris’s former industrial area Ivry-Confluences, and the restructuring of the La Bastide district in the post-war Parisian satellite town of Cergy-Pontoise. Since 2000 Carlos has taught and researched at the National School of Higher Studies of Architecture and Landscape Architecture, and he is affiliated with the French Scientific Research Council CNRS (Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique).

CHRISTER LARSSON
Christer is the director of the urban planning department of the City of Malmö. He has held this position since 2005, which is shortly after the Öresund Bridge had been built to connect Malmö with Copenhagen, and shortly after the Building Exhibition Bo01 had taken place on a derelict wharf area in Malmö’s Western Harbour. Christer has taken on the challenge of regional urban development in a globalized world from his municipal perspective, and he can be said the urbanist – maybe the landscape urbanist? – brain of the profound transformation of this city from derelict provincial harbour to urban hotspot in the North. Christer is trained as an architect at LTH Lund and KTH Stockholm, and at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute of New York. He frequently serves on juries for international architecture competitions, such as the one I quoted from, Imagine Skane 2030, he is a member of the International Urban Development Association, he heads the Nordic City Network, and he represents the initiative Sustainable Urban Malmö.
