Where Kockums once built ships, a new urban district is taking shape. In Varvstaden, Malmö’s industrial heritage meets the urban life of tomorrow, through a transformation that sees existing structures not as remnants of the past, but as resources for the future.

Varvstaden was awarded the Skåne Architecture Award 2026 for its sensitive and innovative approach to transforming the former shipyard area. By preserving buildings, reusing materials, and giving industrial structures new functions, the site’s history is carried forward while creating new spaces for living, working, and gathering.

During the visit, we take a closer look at how the industrial heritage lives on in the built environment and discuss the opportunities and challenges that arise when existing structures become the starting point for future architecture.

How can we create new value by making use of what already exists? And what role can reuse and sensitive transformation play in developing a more sustainable city with a distinct character?

Meetings and Walks

This fall, Form/Design Center, together with Sveriges Arkitekter Skåne and Malmö in the making, invites you to a series of guided visits and city walks. The series highlights some of the region’s most acclaimed and notable architectural projects – from winners to shortlisted finalists in this year’s architecture awards. Together with the architects and teams behind the projects, we explore how innovative design, circular thinking, timber construction, and reuse are shaping the future of our built environments in Skåne.
